Bird Sanctuary Planting Weekend

October 25-28

Anyone can provide sanctuary for birds - just plant a native tree and a couple native shrubs!

Join in as people around Northern Virginia plant mini habitats on their properties. If you are having a public event, let us know so we can help celebrate it.

Why shrubs?

Why is a tree campaign talking about native shrubs? The shrub layer is an essential part of the ecosystem, provding food and nesting sites for many animals. For other benefits such as stormwater capture, the only difference between a native tree and a native shrub is one of degree.
